On Tuesday, May 27, 2014, the third cohort of Urban Scholars began their internship with the City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, Metropolitan Council, Greater Twin Cities United Way, and PCL Construction. Urban Scholars is a leadership development summer internship program for college students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. The program introduces undergraduate and graduate students to local government and public service. 36 Urban Scholars were placed in various divisions across the organizations based on their interests and qualifications. The 12 week program places the nation’s best and brightest college student alongside key decision makers in the Twin Cities area.
Urban Scholars is managed by the Employment Equity Division of the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights, which aims to close the employment gap in a city and metro area that suffers from one of the highest disparities between white and non-white unemployment in the country.
