How-To: Property damage and claims through the City of Minneapolis

By Michael K. Browne, Assistant Director – Office of Police Conduct Review

Photo by Ryan PatrickThe Office of Police Conduct Review often receives complaints involving property damage caused by Minneapolis Police Officers. The City may be held accountable in certain instances for the cost of repairs. However, the Office of Police Conduct Review does not provide monetary awards for claims involving property damage. Instead, the Risk Management & Claims Office investigates these allegations and can award reimbursement.

Filing a claim is easy. You can locate a form on the web or by calling (612) 673-2969. Claims must be filed within 180 days of the incident. You will need to include two estimates of the cost of repair and details about the event that establish why the city should be held accountable. The form should be returned to

Risk Management – Claims Office
330 2nd Avenue South, Suite 550
Minneapolis, MN 55401

An additional note, filing a claim for damages with Risk Management does not prevent you from filing a complaint with the Office of Police Conduct Review. If you believe that the officers involved committed misconduct, contact the Office of Police Conduct Review at 612-673-5500 or file a complaint online.
