By Velma J. Korbel, Director – Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights
Please join me in welcoming Karen Francois as Director of Employment Equity for the City of Minneapolis. Karen’s first day on the job was January 19th. She will join the One Minneapolis Equity in Employment project team in the ongoing efforts of the city to mitigate the racial disparity in employment. You may remember that the One Minneapolis equity in employment program was one of the only new programs Mayor Rybak and the city council funded in 2012 with an initial investment of $300,000. A key focus of the initiative will be on providing hard-to-employ workers with training and placement for good jobs in the green economy.
Karen will be responsible for connecting employers that have identified current or future job opportunities to city job training programs and to minority candidates that have successfully completed training but have not been able to secure jobs. Karen also will be responsible for convening a council of advisors who are leaders from business, government, philanthropy and the nonprofit community whose purpose will be to advise, support and advocate in a variety of ways that will enable the city to move even more aggressively toward closing the employment gap. Additionally, Karen will work with me to identify opportunities for collaboration with other city departments to carry out elements of the goal of Many People, One Minneapolis.
Karen’s office is located in the Minneapolis Civil Rights Department at City Hall Room 239. She can be reached at(612) 673-2053 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
